The Tunisian village of Star Wars threatened by sand
In Tunisia, the site of Mos Espa, which was filmed part of the Star Wars saga, the birthplace of Anakin Skywalker, could be buried by the dunes.
To save the settings, movie fans and the Chamber of Tourism mobilize, and leverage financial support from users.
The scene is worship for lovers of Star Wars: young Anakin Skywalker, played by Jake Lloyd meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who is looking to repair his ship. On the screen, the scene takes place in Mos Espa village of pirates on the planet Tatooine.
In reality, the shooting took place in NGOs Jmel near Nafta, west of Tunisia. A site now threatened by desert encroachment, and that an association is trying to save, with the support of Internet users.
A RACE AGAINST THE SAND
Mobile dune to the streets of the village and will totally bury the site before September, if nothing is done. "Since then, twenty years, this site is to thank you elements and vandalism," laments Raya Ben Guiza-Verniers, advisor to the "Mos Espa Save" operation, which brings together local hoteliers and geographer in desertification, Nabil Gasmi.
To preserve the scenery, left behind at the request of the Tunisian government, the developing chamber of the oasis and desert tourism (CDTOS), which launched the initiative, called on crowdfunding. The association hopes to raise 300 thousand dinars, or about € 140,000 to carry out all the work of dredging and develop the site. Customers can contribute until June 6, in exchange for an honorary title of Jedi.
A first phase of work began in late March, 160,000 dinars (€ 73,000) have already been allocated to the governorate of Tozeur (the nearest town) for dredging. In total, about 20 000 m3 of sand to be moved, which will put the site "out of danger for the next 8 to 10 years," according to officials of the initiative.
DEVELOPING LOCAL TOURISM
In addition to restoring sets and frames, the initiative also wants to perpetuate the site by installing host infrastructure (electrics, toilets, rubbish bins, information boards) for visitors, says Raya Ben Guiza-Verniers. Local tour guides must also be trained to discover the place.
"Before the revolution, more than a hundred people came to visit the site every day, explains the manager, but since then, because of the proximity to the border with Algeria and Libya, the region was classified in the red zone and tourism at half mast. "Three quarters of hostels in the region have closed since 2011, according to CDTOS.
The twenty houses with round roofs Mos Espa, built from scratch for the film, is a major tourist and economic importance to the region. "A pardon would create a social and cultural dynamics," says Raya Ben Guiza-Verniers. A nearby museum project should also educate visitors about the flora and fauna of the desert. City Space Pirates could well turn into a tourist haven.

Star Wars to the rescue of tourism in Tunisia
NGOs Jmel - Fill hotels and tourist shops with the Jedi of Star Wars, this is the challenge of southern Tunisia, who hopes that the film locations of the saga will boost a sector in crisis.
Invaded by the sand there is still a month Mos Espa, the village of Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi become the legendary Darth Vader, slowly reborn since the bulldozers began to clear away the huts built in the late 1990s filming of episode 1, the fourth installment of the series.
The goal is to make this place surrounded by the dunes of the Sahara, 45 km from Tozeur, a star attraction as well as the camel rides and oases visits.
First hit in early May, a Tunisian and foreign fans of the Star Wars meeting was held there.
Dressed as "Stormtroopers", "Imperial Guards", "Jedi" and other "Sith" tens of Tunisians, Germans, Norwegians and Belgians gathered lightsabers in hand to watch the saga, lying on mats and cushions installed Mos Espa to center. And costume parade was held through Tozeur, under the eyes of the people happy.
PILGRIMAGE
"This site is a high place of pilgrimage for thousands of fans and also sustains the local economy, tourism and culture, hence the importance of this operation" sand ladders, falls Raya Ben Guiza, Campaigner associative "Mos Espa Save".
"The first phase was successfully completed, now the site of the spring sand and you can see the entire structure, so we go to the second, and most important: the restoration and development of the decorations," she adds.
Approximately $ 204,000 is needed to complete the mission, about half was put forward by the Ministry of Tourism and the rest must come primarily from sponsorship.
"It's a setting that attracts, you just restore it, keep it alive and preserve the dune," adds Jallouli Taieb, who oversees the restoration of the site, whose real name Ong Jmel means "neck of the camel" .
As for residents, this event is a breath of fresh air, tourism struggling as elsewhere in Tunisia, to the levels of before the revolution of January 2011.
Walid Souissi, a 29 year old engineer, "this event is new and quite different (...) that takes us out of the traditional image of camels or someone holding a Machmoum" these small bunches of jasmine characteristics of southern Tunisia.
Although the attendance of the first events is still small, welcoming, positive, reassuring authorities that rely much more meetings.
"This is the answer print and we intend to do better in future editions," says Zied Chargui representative of the Ministry of Tourism.
Especially as other scenes of the cult series were shot in Tunisia, where eight film sites in total are scattered across the desert. The city of Tataouine in the south inspired George Lucas's name on the planet Tatooine.
CAUTION
Among professionals, some remain cautious in anticipation of a Star Wars project that will be part of a strategy for development.
They note that Tunisia continues to live in the interim, with a fifth government in three years of political crisis and instability. This independent firm should lead the country towards elections in 2014 and finally allow the installation of permanent institutions.
"Elections are expected," said Mohamed Ali Laajmi, hotel owner Sarra Tozeur forced to close - like 18 others in his - for lack of tourists.
"We need radical solutions, more than temporary solutions. Now with those conditions, it can only remain closed. There is no solution, "he adds.
Others want to believe that the new Minister of Tourism, Amel Karboul, will give a boost. She is also eager to push for the development of Star Wars after the launch of associative initiative to save Mos Espa.
"The Minister of Tourism has made us advertise" Ong Jmel "and we feel that little by little is better (...) Before we were dead. Now I feel that the future of tourism is more favorable, "says Mounawar Taegue, 49, owner of a small shop in Tozeur.

Sète opens its Museum of the Sea
The old building Ifremer plumb the Mediterranean, with clean geometric lines very 50, adjacent to the famous marine cemetery where Paul Valery and Jean Vilar rest. Completely redesigned by design architecture, the Museum of the Sea of Sète is composed of large rooms with long, narrow bays open on the Mediterranean.
The course begins with a comprehensive evocation of the port of Sète with plans, models, video, old sepia images and number of documents. We learn that already in the eighteenth century, fought against the silting Sétois using an arsenal of Jules Verne. Then comes the interesting part, the room Aversa name of a dynasty of Carpenters originally a shipyard established here in 1902 The heir to the name-a passionately embarked on the model with the idea to rebuild in the same models and the whole fleet of fishing ports coming out of the family arsenal. Some of them have been protected in 2010 as a historic monument. It finds the manufacture of a Catalan boat with two bilge keels, allowing the fire on the beach. The boat was used for fishing for blue fish (sardines, anchovies, mackerel ...) and Sete had in the beginning of the last century more than 90 lined up along the pier St. Louis.
The boat-beef
Marseille still tray otherwise known as "sharp" introduced in the nineteenth century by Italian carpenters and boat-especially beef is discovered. This big boat weighted down by fifteen tons of gravel was used in couples who pulled a net as the ox pulls the plow. The sharp was used until the 50s.
Another room is devoted entirely to the boat school Governor General Lépine and his incredible destiny. He was the liaison between Marseille and Algiers when his captain disobeys orders Vichy warning him to return to Marseille. He was one of the few ships to fly the flag for the Cross of Loraine and received February 21, 1948 the Croix de Guerre!
Finally, the last rooms take visitors in jousting that punctuate the life of the port since the sixteenth century and are every year around St. Louis (late August) a major point of local life with tens of thousands giving visitors a living at this charming museum extension.

Spectacular kites expected to Dieppe.
This year's theme for the International Kite Festival (from September 6 to 14) in Dieppe is "Luminescence". It already looks real and spectacular flying works whose daring figures compete to win the top prize. All around, each specialty. The stunt kites, sport, those dedicated to fighting the historical cultivating traditional materials and figures, those that focus on design and artistic flights, huge, miniatures ... He does not miss.
Three delegations will be honored. India and Indonesia, two countries that have invented these strange flying machines (there for the first 1500 years, 3000 years for the latter) and are now growing their knowledge in the manner of an art. Approval or combat sport (a system of strings sharp overcomes opponents), decorative object or ceremony, the kite, there, its heroes and champions. Some will be at Dieppe.
Worthy of modern paintings
Germany will also be on the front of the stage, but to present the modern versions of these funny paintings lighter than the wind. We will not count the looks lost in the sky to contemplate these worthy figures of modern paintings or cartoon characters.
Finally, many events will enrich the event. A day for children (Wednesday 10), creating gardens wind, photo exhibits and aerial videos, night flights, parades, concerts ...

From Seville to Tangier, a Moorish breakaway
Busy morning lethargic afternoon, turbulent night in Christian churches, gardens in Arabic, gypsy in some neighborhoods by tourist will ... Seville, the hours, turning a place to shadow of a minaret, changes according to the light that he carries. The Sevilla seem never to return to the beauty of their city, which is understandable. They say "quien no ha visto Sevilla no ha visto maravilla" and we believe them. And it is with curiosity and excitement that starts, the streets of the beautiful Andalusian, looking splendid Muslim past. We do not see it right away, even if there are many traces, but one is immediately immersed in an atmosphere, settings, pace of life to many centuries of domination and Muslim presence.
At daybreak, for example, when Seville out of his sleep, snorts and discards the last chills of the night, you can see the beautiful mess of flat roofs, huddled against each other, neighborhood Santa- Cruz. Here and there we see a Sevillian hanging clothes on a line, another watering cacti, or gathered around a breakfast family. These little morning ritual takes place with the backdrop of the Moorish battlements of the Alcazar, the tower-minaret of the Cathedral, one or two palms and harmony that binds the faded ocher glazed tiles with white lime. You might think in an Arab town and it is expected that the air is split by the sound of a muezzin.
Detail on the entrance to the Giralda, the icon of Seville.
This oriental heritage, long overshadowed yet founder of Andalusian culture, dating back to the arrival in 711, near Tarifa, various Muslim ethnic groups (Arabs, Berbers, etc.), who created Al-Andalus. This expression denoting the part of the Peninsula under Islamic rule, will create the word Andalusia. In the wake of Cordova, then radiant capital of the Umayyads, the city experienced a major economic and cultural boom. It built the first mosque and the Alcazar, place of residence of the governors of Cordoba. The fall of the Caliphate of Córdoba (1031) propelled the capital of the most powerful Taifa (small kingdoms), where the poet King Al-Mutamid maintained a literate and refined court. Then there are the Almoravids who seized Seville, before being driven out by the Almohad Seville in 1147 then enters its golden age.
Built in proud capital of the Almohad empire, she cultivates the intellectual and artistic life while fascinating medieval Europe still unpolished. At night, the streets of Seville are informed and safe while those of Paris are just muddy cutthroats. The city is embarking on many embellishments, including the construction of the Great Mosque (replaced by the Cathedral after the Reconquista). The Alcazar palace was expanded, docks are built over the Guadalquivir and enjoys strong walls is introduced. This fortified, leaving only the Torre del Oro and portions of walls of adobe. In 1248, the entrance to the city of King Ferdinand III of Castile put an end to Muslim rule in Seville.
Any duality of Andalusian memory is included in this architectural collision
Thus informed, we can sink us into the rhythm of the city; wander through the labyrinthine layout (typical medina) alleyways of the Jewish Quarter; admire moving flowered balconies; lead to the irresistible plot Doña Elvira buried under jasmine, bougainvillea and orange; take a quick furtive look at the enchanting patios covered with tiles (other Arab heritage) the Callejon del Agua. Still on foot, because taking the car to discover Seville hold of madness. So get lost, then dive to the ship extravagant stone cathedral. Essential jewel magnetizing the entire city, it summarizes all the pomp. Where to start? It seems appropriate to consider first of all visit the Giralda. Not only because its facade, composed of interlacing and rafters, displays a rare elegance, but also because, with its 97 meters, it was long the tallest tower in the world. Its silhouette is both powerful and slender is known all over the planet. It's sort of the Sevillian Eiffel Tower. Therefore difficult to avoid the cohorts of tourists poured through conditioned pullmans.
But it is interesting to know is that its architect Ibn Baso wanted her as resembling a twin sister minarets Rabat (Hassan Tower) and Marrakech (Kutubiyya), other jewels of Almohad architecture. With the court of ablutions (or Patio de los Naranjos), this is what remains of the old mosque built in 1172 by Caliph Yacoub Yusuf. A true wonder to say Muslim travelers of the time, supplanted in the fifteenth century by the dizzying Gothic cathedral. The five naves, the row of pillars carved, carved furniture, gold and silver debauchery chapels border on provocation. But the whole duality of Andalusian memory is included in this architectural collision and this improbable fusion of the cross and the crescent. We will not leave the premises without appreciating the tomb of Christopher Columbus and the beautiful stained glass windows of the sixteenth century depicting scenes from the Old Testament.
For those who want to dream in the middle of the good life that emanates from Muslim architecture, the palace of the Alcazar is the solution of choice. A series of rectangular courtyards traversed by canals and fountains, as well as sumptuous rooms await you. These domes carved wood, these remarkable tiles lined walls, the ornate coffered ceilings, these finely crafted columns were built more than a century after the meeting of Andalusia in Spain. For despite the Reconquista, Islamic art, prized by Christian rulers, has continued under the name of Mudejar art. A term meaning "subject" and that applies to Muslims allowed to remain in the territory. The Mudejar synthesis of Muslim and Christian art taste, unique to Spain, decorated with arabesques, its lobed arches, its stone temple embroidery of a voluptuous lifestyle.
The walls of the Alcazar Gardens.
But do not miss the only remaining room of the Almohad palace patio del Yeso. Chiseled archway, partly perforated and covered with stucco, are all reminders of the sophistication of this dynasty. Along the palace succeed stunning beauty gardens, arbours and secret paths, planted palms, magnolias and flower beds, refreshed water jets, murmuring fountains and underground pools. In the morning, the heavy air corona is a miraculous purity.
Another clear of Mudejar art, Casa de Pilatos, an aristocratic mansion became the symbol of the Renaissance in Seville, and also one of its most beautiful palaces. Arches are home to a stunning Roman and Greek statuary, including a sculpture of Athena from the fifth century BC After borrowing the gray marble staircase decorated with beautiful tiles, it opens into a room decorated with frescoes representing Renaissance poets and emperors of antiquity. The ceilings and the coffee table Smokers, not far, reaching the peak of the Mudejar marquetry. Marvel at The Death of the bull in the arena, Goya (lounge del Torreon), then stroll through the peaceful gardens with an Italian flair.
But the ideas of luxury and idleness that suggest places as poétiquesne not forget the other side of Al-Andalus. The cities perched-like military bastions, agricultural villages coiled in the valleys and villages that dot the white peaks of the Sierra de Cadiz and Ronda highlands. Narrow streets, small houses carefully whitewashed cube, black grilles, bright red geraniums glances give them the look of Medina. Encamped at the entrance to the route of the white villages (pueblos blancos), a network of city-fortresses developed by Muslims, Arcos de la Frontera seems suspended in space.
Erected on top of a cliff with its impressive castle built by the dynasty of Ben Jazrum, it overlooks one of the loops of the Rio Guadalete. Beyond Arcos de la Frontera, the land takes places the color of African laterites and of these copper valleys where olive advancing like an army in battle, beauty is everywhere. Bunches of palm trees and cactus arise at any moment. The villages are losing their tiles in favor of terraces, limestone walls is brighter, the spiers of the minarets have slimness they once were.
Encamped at the entrance to the route of the white villages, Arcos de la Frontera seems suspended in space ...
As as you approach the ocean, Europe éloigne.Le Morocco is not far ... At the end of the peninsula, from Algeciras or Tarifa, weather clearly, as can be seen from a balcony of the magic Ifriqiya. Africa, the cradle of Arab scholars courses Cordoba, Seville and Granada, translators of the legacy of Aristotle and other thinkers. Daily ferry connects the two separated by only 14 kilometers continents and view the wide, Tanger White "seems almost cheerful (...), with its walls of a snowy whiteness, high crenellated casbah and plated minarets old tiles, "as Pierre Loti observed during a diplomatic mission.
Moulay Hafid palace (now the Palace of Italian Institutions) in Tangier.
No sooner do we landed, the wind blowing through the unexpected that city. You lose the sense of the day, the year, the time in which we live. The main road from the port quickly made way for streets, alleys and streets, when they become too narrow for the taxi can pass, we continue to walk in the middle of a lively crowd. Accompanied by Rachid Tafersiti, writer, connoisseur of the backyards of the old palace and maze of the medina. Concentrates on the details of a network of sculpted plaster, door to richly painted doors, a patio paved with tiles, we have more than once lost mark. Our mental map of the city has become blurred, faded and we did not know which side were the ocean, Little Grand Socco (Souk in Spanish) that we had crossed. "One of our finest examples of Moorish architecture after the great mosque (time converted into a cathedral!) And delicate floral cartridges, is the palace of the Kasbah" is he exclaims.
Its various rooms are richly decorated with real gems sheltering alcoves domes dotted with stars polygonal horseshoe arches supported by columns and half columns, friezes carved wooden stalactites. They currently host the showcases of regional ethnographic museum and archaeological.
Other Artistic survival mixing Muslim and Christian art art, the palace of Italian Institutions (Moulay Hafid former palace) deploys large ceremonial and beautiful Andalusian garden rooms. But St. Andrew's church, whose bell tower with a square base stands as a minaret, remains the most singular example. Inside the arc finely executed on the opening chorus is set with a short strip where the Lord's Prayer in Arabic! Amazingly symbiosis reflects the ceaseless movement of men left Islamize Spain and fleeing, seven centuries later, the Reconquista. An era where thought and artistic creation have had some great times ...

50 sailboats of time(period) to clear off in Brittany
The tall ships are still dreaming. With Sailboats Britain, their collision came true. From Easter to All Saints' all-or even year- fifty boats of yesteryear take fans of spray off Finistère, Brittany, Côtes d'Armor and Ille-et-Vilaine. More than just walking, these fishing trips tell the beautiful story of maritime heritage. Cast off.
Modest sardine, luggers, cutters, sturdy lobster, tuna, lugger, majestic brigs, schooners ... make up a disparate fleet of great charm: 51 units of 6 meters to 30 meters long, nothing but tall ships, historic vessels classified or rebuilt identically. And if their home ports are scattered on the rugged coastline of the four departments of Brittany, all of Saint-Malo to Vannes, flying the same flag "Sailboats Britain," black and white as the regional flag "Gwenn ha" .
The boats belong mostly to individuals, sailors wishing to maintain sharing their passion with the public. For ten years, they were more likely to offer trips exceptional sea, comment, fishing trips, picnics and other tastings. But these individual initiatives were often limited by management problems and lack of promotion.
Action Plan
Love this wonderful crew maritime heritage, the General Council of Britain has decided to take the helm. There are three years, an action plan has been implemented to help skippers through training (management, heritage knowledge ...) and enhance their offer to tourists.
This has been consolidated under the banner "Sailboats Britain." This is not (yet) a label but almost. On the marker on site at the lodge boats, and the jacket with logo of their captain. And it obviously floats on the Internet. However, without dedicated website. Users to navigate skillfully on that of the Regional Tourism Committee (CRT) to discover this virtual fountain of all yachts, together with bridges leading to the site of each of them. www.tourismebretagne.com/a faire/naviguer/voiliers-of-britain
Selected fleet
Main criteria for selection, reception and benefits. "The round in the water does not interest us. All output must last at least three hours and provide explanations heritage of quality, on the boat itself and its environment, "says Ronan Le Baccon, responsible for the development of heritage to the Regional Council. "Special envoys" also test anonymously and regularly, these mini cruises before awarding (or not) its flag to the boat or even scuttle the selection.
Proof that the idea is good, attendance jumped 25% this year, while the fleet had grown by only 8%. As for prices, there is something for every budget, with an average range of 30 € to 100 €. And, behold, the outputs on board the most spectacular boats are not necessarily the most expensive. Three examples.

Polynesia: Tetiaroa, the island of Marlon Brando
Tumi's 26, the grace of a mermaid born of clear lagoon and a look in which birds fly to Wed She knows them all, they are his passion. Reef Heron, red-footed booby, sooty tern, black nodi, Commander of the Pacific. It follows each pair watch on litters, please do not disturb. Accompanying Tour and formed the wisdom of nature, Tumi is princess of Tetiaroa, the atoll of 6 square kilometers with 13 islets, here we say motu float 53 kilometers north of Tahiti. All Polynesians know that this cake coral topped with coconut and casuarina trees was once home to the royal Pomare dynasty (eighteenth and nineteenth centuries). Tahitian rulers had family there to the break here to recharge.
In this initial time, the sky was courteous and willing to dispense helpful advice government designated the traitors to sacrifice on the altar (marae) gods maho'i much as jeunettes to marry tomorrow. Mana, the spirit of the islands, then sealed a sensual harmony between a prodigal nature and serenity of men.
Kings have spun, mana remained. Today, Tetiaroa shines new light. Tumi also inherited the lights of his people, a wire stretched between sky and lagoon. Sure she can speak with the wind, flowers and stars. Just like his grandfather, Marlon Brando. He lived here from 1970 to 1990, Gorgeous Robinson: "My mind always calms me when I imagine the night sitting on my island in the Pacific," he recounted.
Thirteen islets (motu in Tahitian) make up the atoll of Tetiaroa, 53 km north of Tahiti. One is occupied by the hotel The Brando. The others are the property of seabirds.
On July 1st, The Brando was inaugurated in Tetiaroa. A hotel outside the norm. Great news but no overwater bungalow 35 villas with private pools open on one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, giant flat screens, Wi-Fi throughout, a gourmet restaurant, Mutiny, the card is signed Guy Martin (3-star Grand Véfour chef in Paris), a Polynesian spa with, among others, a treatment room in the trees, a beach bar that will quickly integrate a top ten international, a pinpoint service center wildlife Research and the local flora which residents have access thousand à la carte activities and even fairly common tariffs (€ 3,500 a night, booking a minimum of three required). All inclusive is true: champagne, massages, meals, excursions ... Connoisseurs say "all inclusive". In short, a stash that they trust the secret in good fortunes, a refuge to dream all travelers looking elsewhere.
But beyond, The Brando wants to be the first 5-star 100% green, capable of displaying a total energy autonomy and near-zero carbon footprint. This is unprecedented.
The Brando, on Motu Onetahi, one of the islands of the atoll, here, the pool and the buildings that house the restaurants.
The hotel is born of madness. That of Marlon, first. Came here in 1960 during the filming of Mutiny on the Bounty in waters where Fletcher Christian sparked the mutiny against Captain Bligh (1789), he returned with a wife, Tarita, who plays the role of Maimiti his Polynesian conquest on the screen, and the intention to acquire Tetiaroa, "It is even more beautiful than anything I could have imagined." atoll belongs to the daughter of a dentist who puts never stay. Two hundred thousand dollars later and after having promised not to cut down any tree endemic Brando takes its Polynesian kingdom. All his euphoria, he wants to make heaven on earth. His Year 01 to him, very, very far from the spotlights and Hollywood pretensions. He built 14 fare (house in Tahitian) wide open to the pale blue of the lagoon wonderful, just to share the emotion, sarong and bare feet in the sand, with a few stray pass. A Tarita, his children, the giant illuminates his utopia "to establish a self-sufficient community where Tetiaroa find themselves associated research and training, agriculture, aquaculture and tourism in a protected environment for the benefit of all. And create a clean community that does not upset the ecological balance of the lagoon. "
However, the dream to its realization ... A mini-hotel, a turtle farm and lobster, research conducted by the Cousteau Society, nothing works. In 1990, Brando left Tetiaroa. He will not return.
Fortunately, mana before. And if delirium generated the forefront? And if the dreamer crossed an entrepreneur? And if a common passion, they invented the impossible? Richard Bailey, everyone calls him Dick, is California. His student coil hides a happy sixties. Francophile Emeritus able to slide in the same sentence "paradigm" and "notwithstanding", Bailey has built in thirty years, the first hotel business of Polynesia. Ensign Pacific Beachcomber shines Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora (two locations), as well as two cruise ships including the famous Paul Gauguin.
The 35 villas Brando open directly onto the beach, after passing through a garden planted with coconut and pandanus.
In 1999, he met Brando here, there, elsewhere. Together, they speak kind, hotel, innovation, Polynesian heritage. It is decided, the grail will Tetiaroa.
"When we discussed the future of the atoll, we had the same vision: the absolute protection and non-negotiable nature (14 bird species, 158 plant species of which 38 are indigenous, 167 fish families, etc.), its available to scholars and visitors, the invention of a tourist site at close to zero impact. Marlon had a thousand ideas on the matter. I am committed to respect the spirit. "Brando died on July 1, 2004, and part of his ashes is scattered on the atoll. Dick returned to Tahiti with The Brando crafted and funded folder.
Nevermind the pitfalls. The nine heirs squabble, local environmentalists howling betrayal, no password complicating the arrival of construction machinery, disposal pits which Brando made his shock, the need to adjust the angle airstrip, Tahitian departments are reluctant ... on July 1, ten years to the day after the death of Marlon, Dick and Philippe Brovelli, his right arm has always Silvio Bion, appointed director, inaugurated the hotel The Brando. Mission accomplished.
Two of the son of the star are present. Teihotu, 46, son of Tarita and father of Tumi. It has long been the only inhabitant of Tetiaroa, preferring the song of the waves crashing down on the reef to the city lights. And Miko, born of another wife, its opposite, worshiping microphones, detailing his thirty years in Los Angeles with Michael Jackson. It came with a bottle of Eau Sauvage, immediately gave Dick Bailey: "He belonged to Marlon. You asparagus different parts of the hotel, Dad was still here. "Tumi smiled. She prefers the family privacy at the time a Hollywood idea of hosting caressed by the caste of Godfather plane piloted by Travolta on board with Brad and Angelina, De Niro and Nicholson, Madonna and Beyonce, Barbra, Sean, Leonardo ...
Glitter, perhaps, but the legacy Brando also required the sincerity and depth. Bailey was a duty to build a microcosm inspired, thought to win the energy battle. Three sources have been selected to power the field and 35 villas served by 150 staff. First, the SWAC (Sea Water Air Conditioning), a brilliant idea of Brando. Its principle: draw water from the deep Pacific (here, 935 meters) where it is at 4 ° C through a pipe 2,5 kilometers long, to ensure cooling of the area and feed the spa water to the millennium purity. Cost: € 6.5 million and zero emissions. Second energy source, the sun. Some 2,400 solar panels are installed along 775 meters of the landing of the atoll track. This is enough to enlighten villas, platitudes (two restaurants, two bars, lounges) and staff quarters. Finally, for safety, a small unit of coconut oil processing (extract of coconut). Not to mention the recovery of rainwater, a station with seawater desalination and parsimonious use of groundwater.
Tumi Brando, guardian of treasure: 14 species of birds, 167 fish families, 38 native plants.
Green diktat generates a quasi-military resource allocation: desalination is for bathrooms, the kitchen garden is watered with aboveground waste waters retired, laundry taps into the water, etc. And for travel, it's electric carts at the time of the household or service villa and bicycle when residents want to go around the atoll following the path slipped under the coconut grove or just go to the bar , the restaurant, the spa (2,000 m²) or on the tennis court covered with carpet so English turf.
A Tetiaroa, one rule of life laid down by Philippe Brovelli and Silvio Bion: "The mood. Everyone eats when he wants, drinks what he wants, does what he likes. "We can not invent most beautiful equation of happiness. As a result, some customers never leave their house. With 95 square for two (room star bed, bathroom and living room), a large sun terrace, a private pool, an ideal booth dinette eye to eye, a display connected to the world, service meters Standing butler and direct access to the beach Sirens (usually deserted) lined by a single blue lagoon, we understand.
Yet, it's impossible to resist the charm of the facilities of Brando. The beach restaurant and gourmet declination Mutiny, only 20 seats, reservation required, a short menu, delicious included in the base price and a cellar as grandiose references unexpected in these latitudes (surcharge). Guy Martin has delegated by Anthony Gonzalez, a passionate thirty to reinvent the island cuisine with mahi-mahi, tuna or bonito, also with the Saint-Jacques barely entered wrapped in yuzu juice and celery, shrimp toast oil chorizo broth flavored paella ...
Then the bars, feet in the sand in the middle of pandanus or perched on overlooking the expansive pool terrace. Architect and designer have adopted the idea of the nest, pretty braided pockets of local wood. This success inspired Aurelian, head bartender inventor of twenty dedicated to Tetiaroa cocktails. Among others, the Dirty Old Bob (named assistant Marlon): bourbon, pineapple, honey from hives away from the coconut, green and bitter lemon. Or Tetiaroa Waters, referring to one of the blue lagoon: vodka infused in which of tiare flowers, grapefruit juice, coconut ice water, dash of curaçao.
Deep Nature Spa, finally, nestled in the palm grove, away from the villas. Daily care is included in the stay. Its designers promise recipes welfare such as invented Polynesian tradition.
Guests of Brando may accompany researchers involved in scientific missions like this by learning to fly fishing.
Brando had demanded that these basic hotel are complemented by a sort of college islands, a study center for experts and scientists. Two entities thus complete the picture. The Tetiaroa Society, chaired by Hinano Bagnis, the research organization is installed on the atoll. Its high-tech lab can accommodate a dozen researchers who work on both the acidity of the ocean migration of humpback whales (July and August), the development of coral, white terns nest, the population of sharks and manta rays. As for the association Te Mana o te moana, it makes the link between the preservation of this fragile ecosystem and customers. Its president, veterinary Cecile Gaspar, is an expert on green turtles. His observations show that they are on a journey of three months and 4,500 kilometers to the Fiji before returning to spawn Tetiaroa, between October and March. Guests of Brando may accompany the researchers, who then become purveyors of knowledge. Similarly, they set out to discover the motus in the company of guides Te Mana o te moana. Side air and in the water to watch the damzelles these blue mini fish Klein smooch bouquets of coral. Approach, yes; admire, certainly; alter, no question.
When it comes to the curious Tahuna Iti, Motu birds, Tumi says, binoculars in hand, the red-bellied bulbul, ariel the frigate, the Crake, Grey-backed Tern. She never reveals his parentage, much less his pride in being the guardian of a treasure. His grandfather promised one day: "If I have the power, Tetiaroa will always be a place that will remind the Tahitians who they are and what they were centuries ago." Tumi look at the sky, open wide arms to provide the offshore wind and scents of ocean. It is the mana of Tetiaroa.

Peru, Amazon dream
IN PICTURES - Joined the World Heritage Site since 1987, the Manu National Park is home to the greatest biodiversity on the planet. Wild and preserved, it is difficult to get to a sanctuary that holds many secrets.
Source Le Figaro Magazine
Suddenly, the engine is silent. The boat aboard which we slip a few hours on the Madre de Dios River slowly lets go with the flow. A finger on his lips, the boatman tells gesticulating a sandy beach bordering the lush jungles of the Peruvian Amazon. Baffled, we few tens of seconds to see it. Two yellow topaz eyes glow in the shade of a huge trunk of dead wood. Laying there, sphinx, a jaguar is watching ... A leap would be enough to reach us. Luck is too good, then, quietly, suppressing somehow our nerves, we decided to grab it and try an approach. The beast rises and, as if to mock us, nonchalantly goes a little further down the beach, revealing under the sun its sublime spotted coat. He will continue his nap on the edge of the forest, still eying us from this intense look.
While much more quiet and shy than its cousins, wild jaguar is not such an unusual encounter for the visitor who ventures into the Manu National Park. This nature reserve (there are 11 in Peru), still preserved of all the horrors of the outside world, covers more than a million and a half acres and has the greatest biodiversity on the planet. A title less eloquent than the figures illustrate.
It counts for example some 850 species of birds. On one small plot, researchers identified 200 different tree species. On the website of Unesco, which recognized as the core of the Manu Biosphere Reserve in 1977 before as World Heritage Site ten years later, it is reported that about 200 species of mammals 100 species of bats and 77 species of amphibians live there. Already considerable, though these figures are understated. The vast majority of the reserve has indeed never been explored. Only a small area (about 20%) is available to researchers and scientists as well as tourists blessed with a permit issued by a small number of agencies.
Arturo is a Machiguenga, a tribe resident of Park Manu, currently in "contact phase" is the only one of his clan to be able to work for the "outdoors world."
But it is not enough to fill paper formalities to access Manu. It comes after a journey of several days, as the saying goes, is as important as the destination. After leaving Cuzco, which rises to 3400 meters in the heart of the Andes, it is necessary to cross the mountains by jeep on steep slopes to reach the site of Tres Cruces de Oro (Three Gold Cross), where Andes meet the Amazon. According to legend, the sunrise would produce the illusion of three cross floating above the forest. Here at nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, we appreciate the spectacle of the Amazon extending like a carpet on the horizon; that Claude Levi-Strauss liked precisely describe in Tristes Tropiques as "a heap of frozen bubbles, a vertical pile of green blisters."
The mind numbed by altitude sickness, muscle shivering in the bitter cold running through the thick layers of clothing, heavy clouds are patient before this striking mural and when the first rays flashed on the landscape, or percent the weather warms instantly. Go through Tres Cruces involves a detour of several hours and forced to wake up in the middle of the night so as not to miss the first light of dawn. But this viewpoint Andes is the step most symbolic, the perfect entry point for anyone coming in the Amazon for the first time. Because it allows, among others, to see the evolution of trees and vegetation along the descent.
Ballet scarlet macaws is one of many shows that await visitors to the park Manu.
At this altitude, only a few dwarf trees litter the hilly. Quickly, these shrubs give way to vast cloud forests of the biological station Wayqecha, bordering the Manu National Park. Located mostly between 1500 and 3000 meters, the forests that cover the slopes of the Andes owe their name to the layers of mist drape them permanently. The clouds pushed by southerly winds come get hooked. Imbued with a mystical atmosphere, they are also crucial. Cloud forests are not only an ecological floor where develop unique and unknown species - during our visit in a position to study a new green frog, fluorescent and transparent, had been discovered - but they represent as 50% of the water supply of the Amazon and are occasionally beautiful hikes on the canopy. If the weather is fine appointments, breathtaking views of the treetops is revealed; otherwise, monkey bridges will give you the amazing feeling of walking on clouds.
The further down and the forest becomes lush, thick and impenetrable. Mountainsides disappear under a green curtain on which the flowers form a myriad of erythrinas tiny red spots.
In this wilderness, the density of vegetation and the presence of uncontacted tribes limit opportunities to venture far from the lodges.
We pass through small villages like Kosnipata ("Above the Clouds"), where coca growers, whose leaf is used to make cocaine but also serves as a basic ingredient for Coca-Cola are working, and percolates in drink against altitude sickness. Arrived in Atalaya, we exchange our jeep against a canoe, on which the rest of the journey will unfold. Every day is between five and six hours of sailing ahead on the Madre de Dios, who travels the Amazon along the Manu National Park nearly 100 kilometers to finally sink into the public area of the reserve. As we progress to the mountains melt away into the forest.
On the banks, there is soil erosion and the watchful eye will detect black or white caimans, turtles and jaguars that rest there. In some places the vegetation has covered dead trees, rising above the other trees, ceibas overlook the forest. These giants with sometimes white trunks and carved by rather large buttresses to house one or two men, along this part of the Amazon. This same ceiba which according to the Mayans of Central America, contained the spirit of the forest. Other trees stand out from the crowd, such as mahogany or cedar Amazon: two of the world's most expensive deer species.
On the road sui down along the Andes, the spectacle of the jungle climbing mountains.
Find themselves surrounded by the mythical and mysterious forest provides a rare sense of excitement: it is at the end of the world, the heart of a terrible wilderness, and especially completely unknown. For the Manu National Park, which is reached after two days of canoe has a characteristic other than to host a plethora of species in the world's biodiversity. Of uncontacted peoples living there called again: the Machiguenga, the Yaminahuas and Amahuacas. In exile since the early twentieth century after being enslaved by the settlers, the indigenous peoples are protected from contact with the outside man by international and national laws strict: hence the formal ban tourists leave the restricted area of Manu.
These laws are designed to maintain their integrity (these tribes are for example not immunized against certain bacteria that we carry), but also to protect us. The Mascho-Piros mark the beginning of their territory by two crossed bamboo. Ignoring this warning may result in serious consequences: a ranger was killed a few weeks before we arrived. We are the first to have resided inside Manu after the tourist area was closed following the tragedy. Suffice to say that sleeping in a lodge without electricity, surrounded by the Amazon and adjacent lands of such tribe is a fascinating experience.
On the banks of the Madre de Dios, lurking on the edge of the Amazoni a jaguar resting in the shade of trees.
In the evening, the Madre de Dios blazes sunset on one side and flickering reflection of the moon on the other. On site, only the necessities: a bed, a mosquito net and candles. In such an atmosphere - and having previously jammed his chair against the door of his hut, you never know - you fall asleep easily overwhelmed by the stifling humidity and almost palpable that permeates the air, and despite the noisy silent of the jungle. And what a special charm to be awakened at dawn by the howler monkey, whose guttural cry could be compared to a long complaint of stomach, or a bathtub drain that empties.
On rare occasions, these uncontacted make appearances on the beaches of the Amazon. "I once saw a long time ago, says Fiorella, our guide. They had to be four or five unarmed and almost naked, a simple loincloth hiding their private parts. Some had beards. "A description that matches the images taken by the BBC in 2012 as the Machiguenga Some tribes have decided to enter a" contact phase ". Our boatman, Arturo, is the only one of his tribe have the right to work outside the reserve a few months a year. He has traveled to Cuzco, but never in Lima, the capital, has neither Michael Jackson or Barack Obama, but can name most of the players of the FIFA World Cup, Argentina's Messi first. "Some people want us to live our tribes still like animals, says Arturo. It's a shame. Outside, there are things that could help us live better. "
The panorama of the Three Golden Cross at 3700 m altitude. The perfect place to watch the game between the Andes and the Amazon.
If hiking in Manu are limited because of uncontacted tribes but also the thickness of the jungle, some rides are worth visiting. The Cocha Salvador, a former arm of the Madre de Dios River, is traversed as a freshwater lake, where a family of giant otters call home. If by luck you get to mealtime, attraction worth seeing. When in a group, these fearsome predators, able to tackle the biggest black caimans, do not hesitate to approach the raft of their hosts ... peacefully. Another must: the Colpas (clay cliffs) on which come to feed at set times dozens of scarlet macaws, parrots these majestic plumage rainbow sky. Visit the Manu National Park is a sight at all times.
Cut off from the world - do not expect to have any telephone network, and all the better - it offers its visitors a unique experience: that of exploring fully wild. And if the magnetism of this incredible reserve does not attract fortunately terrible swarms of tourists, we came across the night in the lodges atypical travelers to the charm of the place. As this Japanese lady living in Hawaii, who decided to try their luck at 80, accompanied by his little son. "I wanted to see two things before I die. Manu, and the Taj Mahal. I started with the hardest. From India seemed a little too easy for my taste. "

The Pand.
Escale romantique à Bruges: The Pand

Quand Vienne s'amuse: 25Hours Hotel

Le Portugal côté dunes: The Oitavos
Quand Vienne s'amuse: 25Hours Hotel
Douceurs toscanes: Castiglion Del Bosco
